Touch
the Wild with Nancy Cowan of New Hampshire School of Falconry
Nancy Cowan became associated with falconry
when she assisted her husband, Jim, with legislation that made
Falconry a legal hunting sport in New Hampshire. In 1990, she became
a falconer and has attained the rank of Master. Falconry is a
demanding sport, requiring a hunting license, Federal and State
Falconry licenses. Nancy and Jim Cowan also hold dual Federal and
State permits for rehabilitating wild raptors. At the New Hampshire
School of Falconry, owned by the Cowans, students can learn to
handle and fly a hawk. Licensed under USFWS and NHF&G, it is one of
only a handful of such institutions across the US.
A member of New England Outdoor Writers’ Association, Dog Writer’s
Association of
America, North American Falconers’ Association, and NH Falconers’
Association, her articles about dogs, falcons and hawks working in
the field have won honors. Besides training her own dogs and birds,
teaching students about falconry, speaking on raptor conservation,
donating time for rehab of injured wild peregrines and to appear at
NHF&G events, Nancy serves as a Cooperator under the UNH Extension
Service Coverts program promoting wildlife management. She has
appeared on Wildlife Journal and NH Chronicle TV programs and has
written seven books.
Nancy’s “favorite thing” is hunting with her hawk. A close second is
sharing the awe that raptors inspire in her. “They are feathers
wrapped around instincts,” she explains. “Once you become intrigued
by how wonderful they are, the learning curve never stops. The
experience of being close to a falcon or hawk is like being able to
touch the wild.“

Attention
Adult Anglers!! Ever wonder how much mercury is lurking in your
body?
Fish is an important part of a
healthy well-balanced diet, and is a great source of protein and
omega-3 fatty acids. Most anglers are also aware that certain fish
have trace amounts of mercury, and that some fish tend to have more
than others. Here’s a chance for you to find out your current
personal mercury exposure level by having a free blood test! As part
of a small research project, the NH Public Health Laboratories will
be on hand to draw a small amount of blood (~1 teaspoon) from
volunteers, which they will test for mercury only. All who
participate will receive a copy of their result within 4-6 weeks.
The total number of participants is limited to 50, so hurry, here’s
your chance. Visit the NH Public Health Laboratories Exhibit space
(near the Kids Trout Pond). |

Archery
Shooting seminar with Dan Zecker of Big Al's Archery
This seminar will teach proper form
for both olympic style and compound archery. Steve Jordon who also
runs the Big Al's Joad program will teach proper form for the
olympic style. Steve is a level 4 accredited coach. Dan Zecker will
teach compound archery. Dan has won many state and regional shooting
events and is both an accomplished archer and coach. Some of Dan's
students have been ranked in the top 5 in the country. He also owns
and operates Big Al's Archery in Seabrook, N.H.
Junior Olympic Archery Development
(JOAD)
This
seminar is geared to the junior olympic archery development program.
This program is geared to teaching children safety and proper
shooting techniques. The program has different achievment levels
from the very beginner to the golden olympian where children and
young adults can advance as far as the olympic team. Ages run from 5
years to 20 years old. Our most important asset in archery, just as in life, is our youth.
The NAA's JOAD (Junior Olympic Archery Development) program promotes
the sport of archery with young people. It stresses qetting a bow in
hand quickly (instead of boring the kid with lectures), yet doing so
safely, and focuses on the positive aspects of the sport. The USA's
last Olympic Gold and Silver Medal archers
started out as JOAD archers. While the Olympic effort IS important,
JOAD recognizes that it is far more important that archery be a fun
and positive experience such that the young archer will continue to
enjoy the sport throughout life. The JOAD coach knows this and
strives to promote success and a positive attitude. Archery is a
sport for a lifetime.
Big Al's Archery JOAD club is offering weekly archery lessons for
students ages 6-18 (Sr. division also available). The club meets
weekly for each eight week session. Stop by Big Al's Archery booth
for more details. |

Bagging
the newest NH state record with John Klucky??

Every hunters dream, you never know
what might just walk right in front of you. Come hear how lucky John
Klucky from Klucky's Outdoor Adventures came across possibly the
newest state record. John will also have the mount available for
your viewing at the expo.
Breaking News...quoted from:
http://www.kluckysoutdooradventures.com/nhrecord.html
"New Hampshire State Record In Jeopardy!
November 25, 2006 John Klucky of Klucky's Outdoor Adventures looks
to have broken the current New Hampshire State Record with this 15
point typical deer. The deer was shot between 8-9 am in Allenstown,
New Hampshire with a Shot Gun. Weighing 167 lbs., the deer's gross
green score is 200 inches. After all of the deductions the green net
score is 187-5/8 inches! This should break the current New Hampshire
State Record but only time will tell after the 60 drying period.
Stay tuned for more information." |

Seminar
about Preparations and Tips for a successful
Moose hunt
with Maine guide and authur, David Kelso.
Dave will demonstrate the various
vocal sounds made by moose both during the mating season and the
post-rut periods. He will
demonstrate the antler sounds of the bull and various items to
imitate them. He will show and demonstrate the decoys that have been
developed for moose and when to use them for both hunting and
photography purposes. Dave has videos that backs up and shows all
the techniques discussed. The video also shows the different hunting
scenarios using the calls, decoys and scents. Dave has been involved
in every Maine Moose Hunt since the start of the modern day hunt in
1980. In 1982 he drew his permit and killed a 49 inch 1004 pound
bull. Dave is on the Pro-staff with Buck Expert Game Calls and
Wildlife Research Center since 200. He has done video work and has
written the definitive book on moose hunting, "Moose Hunting and
Calling Tactics, The Complete Guide to Hunting Moose Across North
America". |
